What Is Medical Waste? Uncovering the Hidden Harm

As part of her PYP Exhibition, Grade 5 student Jasmine explores an often-overlooked but critically important topic: medical waste. With curiosity and commitment, she dives into how improper management of medical waste can affect both our environment and our communities. Through her research and podcast series, Jasmine raises awareness and encourages responsible action. Here’s what she discovered:

Medical waste may not have a lot of recognition nor a topic that has been given thought to some, but if handled and managed poorly, it can affect you. Medical waste doesn’t just impact the environment massively, it also affects the community where medical waste is disposed of. There are six main types of medical waste, and though some of them, such as non-hazardous waste, may seem harmless, but they still require meticulous handling in order to prevent contamination. In my podcasts, you’ll learn about medical waste and it’s impact on the wellbeing of the community, impact on the environment, and what is medical waste as well as what defines it.
